Imperial Hotel is expanding its footprint for the first time in three decades with the opening of a new boutique property in Kyoto, set for spring 2026. The 55-room Imperial Hotel, Kyoto, will be the brand’s fourth hotel, joining its Tokyo, Osaka, and Kamikochi locations.
The hotel is being developed within the historic Yasaka Kaikan, a nationally registered tangible cultural property in the Gion district. Built in 1936 and long used as a venue for cultural performances, the building is undergoing a major renovation to bring it up to modern standards while preserving key architectural elements. The project is being led by Obayashi Corporation, the same firm that constructed the original building nearly 90 years ago.

“This is a unique property where over a millennium of Kyoto’s elegant cultural heritage enfolds the 135-year legacy of hospitality Imperial Hotel has carefully cultivated,” said Reiko Sakata, the hotel’s recently appointed general manager. Sakata, who has been with Imperial Hotel for 22 years, took on the role in April 2025.
Notable preservation efforts include reusing more than 16,000 original exterior tiles and traditional Japanese techniques such as ikedori, in which building materials are carefully removed and reinstalled. The development team has also partnered with local artisans and engaged in community clean-up efforts to support neighborhood ties.
The hotel will feature 55 guest rooms and suites, a restaurant, bar, spa, fitness center, and pool. Through the use of Tokoname terracotta and shared craftspeople, the property also shares a unique historical connection with the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.
The Imperial Kyoto will join The Leading Hotels of the World and is on track for construction completion in October 2025.
